Description:Wheatly's Brick & Tile Works (Springfield Tileries) fronted onto Newcastle Road (A34). This photograph shows the rear of the works, taken from Wheatly Avenue, with marl hole in the foreground and the beehive kilns and chimneys behind. In between are the stacks of roofing tiles (marketed under the trade name "Triton"). On the right hand edge of the photograph are the premises of Newcastle Motor Company. This is now the site of a supermarket. The marl hole has been infilled, and is now part of St John's Primary School playing fields with some housing. The tilery site has also been cleared, now Springfields Retail Park. The trees on the skyline mark the western edge of Trentham Gardens.
