Description:The west side of Swan Square in Burslem. To the left is Queen Street, with The Wedgwood Institute on the right hand side. On the corner is the Art Deco style Burslem & District Co-operative Society Emporium, built in 1931. It was originally a small department store. The building still stands, although at the time of the photograph it had become a food store. To its left is the Swan Hotel (Arnold Bennett's Duck Inn), now called just The Swan.
The underground public conveniences (Gents this side, Ladies far side) have been replaced. The pedestrian zone in Queen Street has reduced the traffic flowing up from St John's Square, just visible at the bottom.
