Description:The view east over the fireclay pit at Scotia Bank, Tunstall that belonged to the Cobridge Brick and Marl Company. This photograph was taken from the footpath at the southern end of the pit and is looking towards the row of houses on Sherwin Street. Beyond is Stanfield. Fire clay is resistant to high temperatures and was suitable for lining furnaces, fire bricks, and for making saggars. The clay was extracted by open cast. This clay pit was flooded in one night when the pit struck the old coal workings of Scotia Colliery. The pit has been infilled and reclaimed and forms part of Scotia Park.
