Description:Looking south towards the old Grenville Pottery from the end of Roylance Street in Tunstall. Since the 1960s, the pottery has been demolished and Roylance Street much shortened. Going off to the left in front of the ovens is Watergate Street and the Church spire on the extreme right belonged to St Mary's Church, demolished in 1985. The area in the photograph is now a mixture of open space and the site of St Mary's Church of England Primary School. Originally known as the Holdcroft's George Street potworks, the Grenville Pottery was an earthenware manufactory and was reputed to be the first to use downdraught kilns, a cleaner more economical method of firing.
