Description:Pearlware over-glaze painted figure, height 580mm . Priapus, the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite, was a Greek fertility god. Maenads were the female followers of the cult of Dionysus, whose worship was characterised by wine-induced frenzies, during which they believed themselves to be at one with the god. This figure was modelled after a marble, known in the 18th century as Bacchus and Ariadne. Detail of figures. 'Enoch Wood, Sculpsit.' is painted on the back of the figure.
