Recalling the air raids
Hilda remembers the horror of an unexpected bomb in Chesterton, during the Second World War:
"The bomb was a one-off, with a plane that just dropped a bomb. There was no warning, it was dusk. People were having tea just going about their business. I saw this plane very low, very strange, and then bang. All our windws came in and we ran in the house, but that was nothing compared to the top of the village. It had been virtually wiped out – streets, and families sitting having tea."
