Description:The camera is looking east along Clarendon Street from near the corner with Sutherland Road. Clarendon Street was known as Granville Street until the 1950s. At the top is the signal box on the Stoke to Derby railway line. The level crossing carries the road across to Hawkins Street, today replaced with a footbridge. The terraced houses on the right date from the second half of the 19th Century At the time of the photograph most were boarded up prior to demolition. All have been demolished and the area is now light industry. The signal box has been removed.
At the start of the 20th Century, the two corner shops were a butcher, baker and beer retailer and nearest to the camera, a grocer and beer retailer.
Parked is a 1950s Ford Consul saloon car.
