Alongside, out of shot, was a reservoir for the Ivy House Papermill in Hanley. Bert Bentley quotes John Ward's History of the Borough of Stoke on Trent saying there was a well "thirty six yards deep" where water was pumped into the neighbouring reservoir and mill stream, and later into Hanley, to feed the paper mill. Between the house and the pool was a public right of way which led to Dividy Road.
The camera is looking east with Hanley in the distance. The church tower is probably St Mark's Shelton. The site has been cleared, but the house was in the vicinity of the bottom of Broughton Road, just north of the Causley Brook.
