Description:Stafford Street and Lewis's "new" store as seen from Miles Bank. The photograph was taken fro the corner of Trinity Street. On the right, in the distance is the "new" 1964 Lewis's store and closest to the camera the "old" 1935 Art Deco style store, destined for demolition. Lamb Street is in between the two. Other shops included Joan's Fashions, Dolcis Shoes, Cavendish Furnishings and Evans Outfitters.
The new store was built on the site of the Bishop & Stonier Stafford Street Pottery and also covered Lewis's Arcade. The old store had been built in 1935, replacing McIlroy's, an earlier department store. The front of the new shop is David Wynnes "Man of Fire" sculpture. Over 30 feet high and made of aluminium the sculpture was kept when the store became Debenhams and linked to the Potteries Shopping Centre.
