Description:The Church of the Sacred Heart stands on the corner of Downey Street and Jasper Street south of the centre of Hanley. It is a large nineteenth century brick Gothic style building which occupies the whole block between Downey Street and Eastwood Place. The photograph shows the east end from near the bottom of Downey Street. Along with the church is a presbytery and a former school building. Grade II listed, the church was opened in 1891.
