Description:Ashlands is the large detached house in the centre of the photograph on Hartshill Road, just before the junction with The Avenue. Off to the left was the Limes Maternity Hospital. Ashlands was the Mass Radiography Centre for Stoke-on-Trent. In the early years of the NHS a mass radiography programme was launched to combat lung diseases, particularly tuberculosis, through widespread screening and chest X- rays. The programme in Stoke also revealed high rates of lung diseases associated with mining and the pottery industry. The building still stands today and is used as a nursery.
