Description:The summit lock (lock 40) and toll charge office on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Etruria. The lock is at the junction of the Caldon and Trent & Mersey Canals, just over 400 feet above sea level. Here the lock raises the canal 10 feet (3 metres). lock has a Boats paid toll charges here, with a roof over the lock to shelter boatmen and collectors. Since the photograph was taken the roof has been demolished. Behind are the buildings and chimney of the Etruscan Bone and Flint Mill, the site of the Etruria Industrial Museum.
