Description:The fireclay pit supplied Cobridge Refractories works which was off the photograph to the left. The camera is looking over the pit towards Hillary Street (on the right) and Crystal Street and Blackwell's Row (to the left). Hillary Street was formerly Grant Street and Crystal Street formerly Charles Street. These streets were laid out in the early 1900s.
The line of strata running across the far side of the pit is an outcrop of the Bassey Mine Coal seam, one of the shallowest of the seams of coal in the North Staffordshire Coalfield. In the photograph it dips gently from right to left. In the distance is the tower of St Paul's Church, Burslem, now demolished.
