Description:The south end of the tunnel on the Potteries Loop Line between Waterloo Road and Cobridge stations. The photograph was taken looking north from the short tunnel at Astbury Street (formerly Copeland Street) which carried the Loop line under the mineral railway between Shelton Colliery (Hanley Deep Pit) and Shelton Iron and Steel Works. All traces of the tunnels and lines have gone. Originally 300 yards long, Cobridge tunnel was filled in after closure of this section of the line in 1969.
Over the top of the tunnel in the centre is the Alexander Pottery and to the left, the Brownfield Works. Both potteries were operated by Myott & Sons who manufactured earthenware. The company became part of Alfred Meakin's and later the Churchill Group. The house at the extreme left edge was on Woodall Street, which runs off Waterloo Road.
