Date:May 1964

Description:Looking south along the Trent & Mersey Canal towards the rolling mills of Shelton Steel Works in the distance. The large building in the centre is the Royal Staffordshire Pottery of A J Wilkinson Ltd., the Mersey Pottery. In the foreground is a warehouse: there is a canal crane alongside the canal wharf.

A. J. Wilkinson Ltd was owned by the Shorter family. Clarice Cliff worked at the Wilkinson factory in the early 1920s. Wilkinson's expanded the Royal Staffordshire Pottery and took over the neighbouring Newport Pottery in the 1920s. The Mersey and Newport Potteries were operated by the Shorter family until sold to Midwinter's in 1964. Canalside housing now occupies the site
