Description:The camera is looking southwards down William Clowes Street with St John's Church at the bottom, on Woodbank Street. William Clowes Street was formerly called Church Street. The road on the left by the BP petrol station sign is Robin Croft, a side street which lead to Bournes Bank and Cross Hill. On the horizon is the tower of Christ Church, Cobridge.
Johnson Matthey produced colours for the ceramics industry although this was just one part of a wide ranging metals, bullion and chemicals company.
The photograph was taken towards the bottom of the street. This area has been cleared and William Clowes Street is a third of its former length. There are two original gas lamp standards (converted to electricity by this time) in the photograph.
