Description:The house at 205 Waterloo Road, Cobridge that was once the home of Potteries writer Arnold Bennett and later, for a short time, the Arnold Bennett Museum. Arnold Bennett's father, Enoch, who was a solicitor, bought a plot of land for £200 on Waterloo Road in 1879 and built a family house at a cost of £900. The large three-storey red brick house, part of a terrace, had six bedrooms and the Bennett family lived here from 1880 to 1888, whilst Arnold was a teenager.
The family lived at several addresses in Burslem, but this house was bought by Stoke on Trent Council with the intention of creating an Arnold Bennett Museum. The museum opened in 1960, but has now returned to being a private house. The building is grade II listed and now has a "blue plaque" commemorating Bennett.
