Description:The George Hotel on the corner of Swan Square and Nile Street in Burslem. The present building dates from 1929. There has been an inn or pub on the site, named variously the George or George and Dragon, since at least the 17th century.
In 1842 the George Inn was attacked and looted during the Chartist riots in the Potteries. By the 1920s, there were plans to build a new hotel on the site, hastened by the fire which destroyed the building in 1926. The neo-Georgian style hotel was opened in 1929 and expanded in the 1950s. In Arnold Bennett's "Five Towns" novels, the pre 1929 George Hotel is called the Dragon Hotel.
In the photograph, Nile Street and Royal Doulton is to the right of the hotel and behind is the spoil tip of Sneyd Colliery.
