Date:December 1963

Description:British Waterways was the authority responsible for maintaining the majority of canals in the United Kingdom. Formed in 1962 it became the Canal & River Trust in 2012. This depot was at the far end of the Burslem Branch, a short canal off the Trent & Mersey Canal in Middleport. The branch opened in 1805 but closed after the banks burst in the 1960s.

This photograph was taken from the southern end of Navigation Road close to the site of the old wharf. The canal basin and some warehouses are behind the depot building. The depot building has been demolished although some of the warehouses (belonging to the Anderton Canal Company) still stand, although largely derelict. There are plans to restore the canal basin.
