Description:A G Robinson's Gordon Pottery was in the area bounded by Pinnox Street and Gibson Street in Tunstall. The photograph shows bottle ovens from Gibson Street.
Bottle ovens varied in their precise design, but all had the characteristic bottle shaped chimney stack. They were fired intermittently (unlike modern continuous ovens). The oven was filled with ware (placing), fired to over 1250ºC, allowed to cool, and then emptied (drawing). The process would then be repeated, usually on a weekly basis.
A G Richardson manufactured the Crown Ducal range of ceramics. The pottery was absorbed by Enoch Wedgwood (of Tunstall) in 1974 and later closed. The site as been cleared and redeveloped. The parked car is a Standard Triumph Mayflower. The four seater car was in production only from 1949 to 1953. With a top speed of 63 mph, a new vehicle cost £480 in 1950.
