Description:Looking north east from the corner of Duddell Road and Chell Heath Road with Chatterley Whitfield spoil tip in the distance. A signal on the Biddulph Valley branch line is visible on the right. The buildings in the foreground are the remains of the Smallthorne Miners' Hostel used for housing miners during the Second World War. During the war there was a shortage of labour in the mines and men of military age were drafted (by ballot) to work in the coal mines. The Minister of Labour was Ernest Bevin and the miners became known as "Bevin Boys". Many of the miners who lived in the hostel were these draftees. After 1945, the hostel also housed miners from Italy, Poland, Latvia and the Ukraine. Today the site is mixed housing and Whitfield Valley Nature Reserve.
