Description:Looking south along the Biddulph Valley branch line. This section is between Black Bull (behind the camera) to Ford Green and the photograph was taken from the Whitfield Mill crossing. Off to the left is the spoil tip belonging to Norton Colliery and Ford Green iron works. Beyond that, on the horizon, is the tip at Deep pit, Hanley. On the right hand edge, above the houses, is the more rounded Sneyd Colliery tip.
Norton spoil tip, closed in 1977, and the surrounding land has been reclaimed and is now mixed residential retail and open space. The houses on the right are on Ball Hayes Road and those on the extreme left, are in Norton in the Moors. Bank Haye Brook runs in the valley to the left. The brook was colloquially named 'Bankee Brook', or sometimes Red River because of the ironstone and other elements that polluted the water from colliery waste and coal washing.
