Description:This photograph is looking along Shelton Old Road down towards the railway bridge and Stoke Road, where the A500 (Queensway) intersection is today. The cameraman was just round the corner from Hartshill Road facing north east. The church tower on the left is St Mark's Shelton, and on the extreme right, the white fronted building is part of Staffordshire University but was the original Technical College. The large square building with the mast is also part of the university.
There is the unusual sight of a policeman controlling traffic and a crosssing, possibly for children going to the schools in Knowl Street, off to the left. In those days, Shelton Old Road wasn't a one way street. North Street goes off to the left just beyond the flag poles. Beyond the Cliff Vale public house to the left, and just out of sight is the large Minton Hollins tile factory.
The Cliff Vale public house was demolished in 2019 to make way for student accommodation.
