Description:This photograph, taken from Glebe Street bridge, shows the junction of the Newcastle under Lyme Canal (left) with the Trent and Mersey Canal. The camera is looking towards Etruria; the gas holders in Etruscan Street are just visible on the extreme right. The properties along the canal had their frontages on Copeland Street.

The Newcastle under Lyme Canal was just four miles long, opened around 1800, largely abandoned by the 1930s and later filled in. There was a navigable 100 metre section of the canal which survived until the 1970s and was used as moorings by Stoke Boat Club. The start of this section is visible underneath the footpath bridge. All the properties in the photograph and the canal bridge disappeared under the A500 (Queensway) in the 1970s.
