Description:The photograph shows what was the California Engineering Works of the locomotive builders, Kerr Stuart & Co. Railway locomotives had been produced on this site since 1892. Kerr Stuart closed down in 1930 and the buildings were occupied by Doulton Sanitary Potteries, Brookfield Foundry and Wagon repairs Ltd. The site was sandwiched between the main railway line, the Colonial Pottery and the Trent & Mersey Canal. It has been cleared of buildings.

Kerr Stuart locomotives were exported all over the world, particularly India and Japan. Some locomotives are preserved and running on the Foxfield Light Railway. Wagon Repairs Ltd had a depot in Stoke from 1920 and moved into the California Works after the demise of Kerr Stuart.
