Description:A view eastwards along the back alley between Lowther Street (to the left) and Denbigh Street (to the right). In the far distance, on the horizon, can be seen the tower of St John's Church on Town Road, Hanley. The Back Alley runs between Portland Street and Eastbank Road.
Gates lead off the cobbled alleyway into the back yards of the terraced houses. The small pitched roof out-buildings would probably have been outdoor toilets or "privies". The alleyways were a favourite place for children's games.
This alley remains but the out-buildings and the cobbles have gone.
