Description:Earthenware jug with Mocha decoration. Rim diameter 70mm. This type of decoration is named after mocha stone, a type of agate with delicate tree-like markings. A wide band of coloured slip was laid on the pot. This was then touched by a brush which had been dipped into an acidic solution or 'tea', which spread into a fern-like pattern. A mid-19th century recipe for 'tea' states that the potter should use 'a saturated infusion of tobacco in stale urine and turpentine'.
