Description:This notice warns the people of Burslem about Sabbath-breaking, or misconduct on a Sunday.
Drunkenness, Tippling, Gaming...
The alleged wrong doings are described here in the following way:
"...the Profanation of the Sabbath - the horrid, impious and execrable vices of Drunkenness, Tippling, Gaming, profane Cursing and Swearing, and other riotous and unlawful Practices ... especially on that HOLY DAY in the Ale-Houses, Streets and Fields of the Parish of Burslem."
Threats
Local ministers and church wardens struck up the alarm, believing that such sinful actions "may justly provoke DIVINE vengeance" - namely the scourge of war.
They used this notice to warn that severe action would be taken to prevent such behaviour.
They warned that notices like this one should be pinned up in every pub in Burslem, so that all would be aware of the resolutions.
