Description:A fine view of the water troughs at Whitmore level on the Stafford-Crewe section of the former London & North Western Railway Co metals.
A mixed goods train speeds through, but not taking on water. Not all trains had the ability to do this.
These troughs enabled water to be taken on board the train to supply the engine.
It meant that trains did not have to stop at stations to take on water, and could take on around 1,500 gallons over the mile stretch.
