Date:1962 - 1963 (c.)

Description:The 'great white winter' of 1962-3 was the coldest since 1740. Temperatures as low as -22°C were recorded.

Heavy snow caused inevitable problems for British Railways, with snowdrifts of up to five metres bringing the network to a halt.

Here, railway workers resort to using shovels so that a locomotive can drive the snow plough through the snow.
