Banding was a form of decoration where a single band or several bands of colour were painted onto the ware.
Usually this was a circle emphasising the shape of the piece.
The bander used a whirler, which was a rotating wheel head on a stand like the woman on the far right of the photo.
Banding is the term for painting lines around ware using colour.
The process would be called gilding if the decorator was using gold.
