Description:Postcard showing paintresses decorating doll's heads in a Stoke-on-Trent pot bank.
On the reverse of the post card it is stated that the image was taken in 1880. However, this date is too early. Blake was not born until the 1870s. It is estimated that this image was taken right about the turn of the century.
The early dating was possibly designed to give the postcard added nostalgic appeal.
Elsewhere in the collection is a slide, which was part of a presentation entitled "Staffordshire Pottery". The reader card that corresponds to this image reads;
"Paintresses. Colour may be further added to the ware by hand either with or without the printed design. The paintresses use camel hair pencils and various metal oxides mixed with fat oil &c. [sic]"
Note: At certain magnifications a patterning effect will appear on this image due the nature of the original.
