Description:This photograph was donated to The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery by Mr. William Cooper in 1996. He tells us that this is Broomfield House at Etruria Vale. At the time of the photograph it was the house of his grandparents, Elijah and Ada Jones.
Elijah Jones was born in 1856 and died circa 1936. He is the man standing on the left of the photograph by the front door. The seated woman with the feathered hat, being served tea by the maid, is Mr. Cooper's grandmother, Ada Jones.
Mr. Cooper writes: 'I stayed at the house as a boy about 1926 and by that time the condition of the place was poor. The slag heaps from Shelton Bar were close to spilling over the boundary wall of the grounds and the serried ranks of tall chimneys had closed in, their belch of black smoke maintained a continuous pall of grey overhead and the smuts necessitated the changing of the white net curtains every two days.'
