Description:During the Second World War many important departments were moved from London and other major cities in order to evade air raids.
On 26 August 1939, just prior to the outbreak of war, the Bankers Clearing House evacuated from London to Trentham. The cheque clearing functions of the Bank of England and other clearing banks were based Iin the Ballroom at Trentham gardens for the duration of the war. Here we see the ballroom laid out as busy office workers go about their business in very difficult conditions.
