Description:This building plan shows the layout of Norton workhouse which was at 266 - 270 Endon Road. Workhouses began in the 17th and 18th centuries as places where the poor worked in return for food and board but by the 19th century had become grim places where those unable to fully support themselves, like the old, unmarried mothers or those with physical or mental special needs, were sent and lived in segregated conditions.
