Date:April 1963

Description:This photograph was taken looking across St Martin's Lane (no longer named) towards the top of Smithy Lane in Longton. Smithy Lane runs between J T Fell Pottery on the left and Allin & Williams, wholesale grocers and confectioners warehouse on the right. Market Street is at the bottom of the lane, and Smithy Lane still connects Market Street to Kingcross Street.

J T Fell, making earthenware jugs, vases animal models and fancies, occupied these works between 1923 and 1957 which is actually the Cyples Old Pottery and which fronts onto Market Street. Prior to this the works were occupied by G L Bentley & Co from 1898. At the time of the photograph, Fell's had gone into liquidation. Cyples Old Pottery is thought to be one of the oldest potworks in the Longton area. Now demolished.
