Stlits and spurs are refractory kiln furniture used to support pottery during the firing process in the kiln. Stilts are specially used to support plates in the saggars. Spurs are used to separate pieces of glazed ware during firing in glost ovens, to stop them fusing together. There were many different types of spurs (eg wedge stilts, soap stilts, new and old bowl stilts) all designed to leave little or no mark on the fired ceramics.
