Description:The abandoned pit once belonging to the Trent Vale Brick and Tile Company was just off Rookery Lane. The camera is looking east over the Trent Valley, with Primrose Hill, Hanford to the right and Longton in the distance to the left. The strata exposed in the pit is part of the Etruria Formation, the principal source for brick clay. The rocks are about 300 million years old (Late Carboniferous).
Pieces of Roman pottery were found in the 1930s in the area of the brick and tile works. Excavations in the 1950s showed this to be the site of a 1st and 2nd century CE Roman pottery works using the local marl. Are the two diggers in the middle of the photograph looking for more?
The site today is occupied by large distribution warehouses.
