Description:The view south from the bridge over the Fowlea Brook just north of Longport Station. At this point the Stoke on Trent City boundary runs along the brook: to the right is Newcastle under Lyme. On the right hand side is the bronze foundry of Birkett, Billington and Newton, in the centre are the goods yards and sheds at Longbridge Hayes and between the two, the main railway line from Stoke. The foundry made large non-ferrous and iron castings. The company had another foundry in Hanley. Behind is the higher ground of Porthill with the twin winding towers at Wolstanton Colliery also just visible. Behind the goods shed, the rolling mills of Shelton iron & steel works are just visible.
The 6 mile long Fowlea Brook has a largely man made course, and spends much of it time in culverts, though the city before it joins the River Trent in Stoke. The Scotia Brook joins it near Longport.
