Description:The camera is looking south towards Shelton iron and steel works and the headgear of Wolstanton Colliery. The photograph was taken from the bridge near the northern end of the Grange mineral railway line.
The Grange Branch of the North Staffordshire Railway ran for nearly 2 miles from a wharf at Commercial Street in Burslem to Etruria. It opened in 1872 and was used to carry coal and ironstone from Robert Heath's nearby Grange Colliery to Shelton steel works and local traffic from Etruria to Burslem. The line closed in 1950.
At the time the photograph was taken, the Grange Colliery site and the line were largely derelict. This area has been reclaimed and is now Grange Park. The site of the wharf is now housing (Stroma Close and Swainsley Close).
