Description:The camera is facing north along Bemersley Road from the end of Knypersley Road. This are is known as Cornhill, a name plate is just visible below the street sign on the wall of the shop to the right. The shop is on the corner of Whitfield Road and Bemersley Road. Bew street comes in from the left in the centre of the photograph. The terraced houses on the left all date from the end of the 19th century.
The beret-wearing man in the hole is a Post Office engineer, possibly installing telephone lines. The van has a sign on the door, "Post Office Telephones".
The corner shop was a general grocer's with adverts for frozen food, furniture polish, tobacco and tea. On the other side of the road are two milk churns: there might have been a farm off to the right on the land that was a small colliery in the 1850s. Out of view by the milk churns would have been the old Norton Working Men's Club.
