Description:This cinema was on the north side of Jupiter Street (formerly King Street South) near the corner of Mars Street, just off Ford Green Road. Around the time this photograph was taken, the Palace became a bingo hall before being demolished and the site used for housing. The Smallthorne Picture Palace was known to locals as the "Scratch".
Parked alongside is a Morris "6 cwt Van" developed from the Morris Minor saloon car. This one is unusual having side windows.
David Rayner notes: "The Potteries Transport and Cinema Supply Company was also based near this cinema in Jupiter Street, Smallthorne. Their dark blue Thames Trader lorries, with company name gold lettering on the cab doors, at one time delivered films to 68 cinemas in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, including those at St Edward's Hospital, Cheddleton and RAF Stafford. I don’t know when they ceased trading, but they had gone by the early 1980s, with the job of delivering films to a very dwindling number of cinemas taken over by the Film Transport Service using a small, white transit van."
