Description:The Vans was a colloquial name given to a small train that was used to transport miners from the coal wharf at Tunstall to Chatterley Whitfield colliery. The wagons were originally used by a travelling circus, and used to transport big cats such as lions.
The train is pictured heading away from the mine towards the tunnel running under High Lane. The houses on the left still stand at Fegg Hayes. The entire area was landscaped in the 1970’s.
