Description:The S-5 seaplane was deigned by Reginald Mitchell (1895-1937). Its design was one of speed and Mitchell’s intention was to win the Schneider Trophy. This was awarded for speed and endurance, but also for technical innovation.
The S-5 had many clever uses of alternative technology, such as the use of copper sheathing instead of radiators to save weight and drag. This and many other features helped the plane win the Schneider Trophy.
