Description:Canals are now mostly used for recreation with many people owning or hiring narrow boats for touring holidays. Some people live in canal narrow boats and have permanent moorings at the canal side or in marinas.

The way canals are used today is in great contrast to their original use as means of transporting materials for industry. Canals were a vital means of navigation in the late 18th century before the introduction of the railways.
