Description:A calcining kiln at S Fielding's Crown Devon Works off Whieldon Road. Originally part of the Railway Works, this photograph was taken next to the Stoke to Derby railway line. Calcining kilns were used to "bake" flint and animal bones. This made them brittle and easier to grind up before they were added to the clay body.
