Description:Before moving to the Potteries Shopping Centre, Hanley Pubic Market was in the old meat market on Tontine Street. This photograph shows the entrance on Tontine Street in the days before traffic was banned. In the background is the tall Free Trade Building, home to Webberley's bookshop and printers. The classical style building opened in 1831 as a shambles or meat market, served by the slaughterhouse at Smithfield on Bethesda Street. The Public Market closed in November 1987, the building, renovated in the 1990s as the "Tontines Shopping Centre", today housing a bookshop and food & drink outlet.
To the right, at the entrance to Parliament Place is an advert for The Place, a famous Hanley nightspot in the 1960s and 70s until closure in the 1990s. Just by the entrance is a typical 1960s baby carriage or pram.
