Description:The Fairfield ceramic works is the large building on the right. The main entrance was on Slippery Lane, which is the road running off to the right. At the time of the photograph it was operated by A G Hackney, earthenware manufacturers, who occupied these works from 1938 until 2008. Hackney's produced porcelain parts for electrical and radio industries including refractories for electric fires and cookers, fuse boxes, insulators, sockets & lampholders. They also made porcelain formers for the production of latex gloves, beach balls, balloons and baby bottle teats.
Just beyond the railway container on its trailer is the entrance to Robson Street Ropery operated by A T Robson, making cords ropes & twines and bags. The works in this part of Robson Street have been demolished and the land cleared.
