Date:September 1963

Description:Erected in tribute to the designer of the Spitfire, the Mitchell Memorial Theatre and Youth Centre stands at the north end of Broad Street in Hanley. The foundation stone was laid in 1955 and the theatre opened in October 1957. It stands on the site of the Old White House which stood in front of the Broad street Pottery. Extensively refurbished with a new frontage in 2011 it was renamed the Mitchell Arts Centre. It is a centre for amateur performing arts.

Appearing on the right hand side is ABC Cinema (the Cine-bowl) which had opened in 1963, becoming a night club and later a casino before closing in 2000. Squeezing in between these two buildings is Ashworth's Pottery factory chimney.
