Date:June 1964

Description:Looking westwards along Hartshill Road from the junction with The Avenue (off to the left). The line of shop buildings has hardly changed: the Cooperative store is just as it was and the street is a mixture of small shops. Modern street lights, a set of pedestrian traffic lights, loss of the trees and yellow lines replacing the no waiting signs are noticeable changes.

Where the lorries are turning is the junction with Victoria Street. At the time of the photograph, this was the site of the Victoria Theatre, itself formerly a cinema. The shops and streets off to the right hand side were built between 1900 and the nearly 1920s. The top end of The Avenue dates from the same time.
